I do not like yelling. It gives me a headache plus I know my kids have picked up on it and they yell back at me or each other. I knew something had to give. Yelling The Cause The Casualty The Cure edition by Lorrie Flem Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I got this as a free download and I'm so glad I didn't spend money on it. I read the whole thing in about 20 minutes. She had a few good suggestions but she didn't go into detail. It seemed more like an ad for her other books and ezine.
I wanted to like this book and for it to help with yelling at my children but I had two or three major issues with this booklet (30 very short pages). There are 12 steps in the book to stop yelling. The first is prayer (well I'm not overly churchy type and would prefer to meditate so I kinda skipped this). The second is recognizing your triggers to yelling which I think is great but basically this is half a page telling you just that and a few things that can trigger your yelling.
Cons
One of the big negatives is "training your children" step where she says she is not going to go into that but you should read her other books. Is she just trying to sale more books?
However the biggest issue I had with this book is it suggest that instead of yelling at your kids for bickering you should SPANK them first before you get angry with them. That is not sufficient cause to spank a child in my opinion. It makes me doubt all of her parenting suggestions.
The suggestions in this book all seem common sense to me. I was very disappointed with the lack of real substance in this book.
I thought it was an OK enough book until I read the part where she actually suggests SPANKING as an alternative to yelling! And she even says, since you shouldn't spank in anger, you should spank immediately, for example as soon as your kids start arguing. I mean, WHAT??!! Your kids start arguing with each other (something kids do all the time) and the first thing you do is spank them? After than I couldn't take the book seriously. I finished it, but just couldn't get over the fact that this woman thinks it's just fine to spank kids, and even promotes it as a first measure of discipline!
As another reviewer stated, part of what I enjoyed about this book is knowing that I'm not alone in this. I don't want to yet at my kids...I hate it! I want to show them my love and God's love everyday...I want to give them a better childhood than what I had. This book has encouraged (and challenged) me - I CAN retrain myself to speak to them differently. It's not going to be easy, but my relationship with my kids depends on it.
I found this book to be a quick read, while still giving information on how to rethink how we respond to yelling. It is first of all wonderful we are reminded to put God first in all areas of our life. Also important we are reminded every child is different. As a parent/grandparent I was able to see that I have done things right over the years, but at the same time I did pick up some new ideas.
No one wants to admit that there are times it happens. This book offers some wonderful and practical (and common sense steps) for learning to gain control, even if it only happens sometimes. Recognizing the triggers and making a plan seem so "common sense" and yet, can be so often overlooked. Some will read this and want to thunk yourself in the head over the "duh" factor. Worth every penny!
You would think that wearing skirts and dresses would make me more demure and feminine. Well, I would anyway. And I'd be dead wrong. Dresses do not stop me from losing my temper and yelling at my "exactly-like-her-headstrong-mother" daughter. Did you get all that? And not only are my 3 year old and I throwing estrogen canons all over the house, but my 1 year old has decided to join the fun. YIKES!
Given the increase in the amount of yelling around this house, Lorrie's e-book Yelling The Cause, The Casualty, The Cure could not have arrived at a better time. Lorrie is somehow able to sympathize with the reasons that I yell while making me resolve to change. And she can do all that without making me feel like a terrible mom! In addition to pointing out the causes, the discusses the effects of yelling on children and how to beat your trigger points.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for review, but all opinions are my own.
